20 years ago (1997)

Granny's Pub and Channel Inn on the Gull Lake narrows has been purchased by the owners of Zorbaz Pizza and Mexican Restaurant. The new owners said they could not disclose future plans for the facility. There are Zorbaz in Crosslake, Pine River and Detroit Lakes.

30 years ago (1987)

With its back against the wall after losing 8-5 to Bemidji, the Brainerd American Legion team stayed alive with a 4-3 extra-inning win over Cold Spring in the District 6 tournament. But it was to no avail, as Bemidji eliminated Brainerd 12-0 in the rematch.

40 years ago (1977)

For Rudolph (Rud) Soderman, supervisor of the county fair's cattle barn, opening day was not a happy one. Soderman, 71, was trampled by an angry steer, resulting in a broken shoulder blade, knee injuries and cracked ribs. "He went completely nuts," said Soderman. "He jumped all over me."

60 years ago (1957)

(Photos) A parade kicking off a five-day dairy promotion here attracted many colorful floats. The Brainerd Marine / Brainerd Dairy float featured Miss Brainerd, Deanna Presttun. The Paul Bunyan Center fire wagon carried Brainerd's own Princess Kay of the Milky Way, Barbara Bossus.

80 years ago (1937)

Brushing and clearing is done and the actual dredging of the diversion channel between Long Lake and the north end of Pelican Lake began this morning. The 4,800 foot channel will require removal of 60,000 yards of dirt. A diversion dam will balance water levels of the two lakes.

100 years ago (1917)

A bevy of six pretty girls with chaperone Mrs. F.J. Alway of St. Paul, hiked the 17.5 miles from Lincoln camp on Pelican Lake to Brainerd, making the trip in 4.5 hours. They walked sandy roads, along lake shore and down the Merrifield road. None dropped out or got blisters.
