20 years ago (1997)

More than $45,000 was raised this past weekend as part of the Relay for Life, a team event to fight cancer. More than 300 people participated in the walk, which began at 7 p.m. and finished at 7 a.m. at Don Adamson Field. More than 10,000 illuminaries were lighted.

30 years ago (1987)

The three, 50-foot lots on Laurel Street where several businesses burned down in a February fire, are now an empty space with weeds and litter. The business owners have no plans to rebuild there. It has become an impromptu parking space for 10-20 cars each day.

40 years ago (1977)

For those not already aware of it, Dutch Elm disease has struck the city of Brainerd. As of this morning, the number of trees suspected of being infected is 107. The bad news is those trees will have to be cut down and, to make it worse, the city does not qualify for state funds.

60 years ago (1957)

Jerry (Chick) Lyscio, homer king of Brainerd's Little League, belted another one out of the park last night, along with a pair of bases-loaded doubles. He totaled six RBIs as his Brainerd Sports Supply Giants beat the National Guard Yankees 11-8.

80 years ago (1937)

With Bobby Campbell of Duluth pacing the field with a par-shattering score of 69 in the Pine to Palm golf tourney at Detroit Lakes, Wally Engbretson of Brainerd placed himself in the running with a sparkling 75. Engbretson is a former Brainerd men's golf champion.

100 years ago (1917)

The Hawaiians, native musicians from the land of sunshine and flowers, delighted the audience at the Chautauqua performance last night and filled the big brown tent. These brown-skinned Pacific islanders are real native artists.
