Under a new state law, counties must check all establishments selling tobacco for possible sales to minors. As Sheriff Dick Ross says, "This is going to get complicated and spendy." He suggested using members of his Explorer Scout troop to attempt purchases under his supervision.

St. Cloud Tech battled the Warriors to a virtual standoff in the first half of the football game, but a fake punt sparked a 27-0 Brainerd victory. With nine seconds left in the first half, Mike Musty dropped into punt formation. But the snap went to Troy Bescheinen who bolted 60 yards for a TD.
40 years ago (1977)
On a cold day that will test a bass fisherman's skill to the fullest, Ron Kobes put together five fish with a total weight of 8.7 pounds to win the final Baxter Bass Snatchers tourney of the year. Season point winner was Roger Ubl, with Jerry Noska second and Kobes third.

Percentage-wise, over-all attendance is improving at C-I schools, but the two groups hardest hit are the band and football team after they came in contact with Wadena students suffering from flu. Half the band is out, and 16 of 22 football players are sick.

(Photo) A 34-year-old Brainerd woman, shown here in her jail cell, has confessed to shooting and wounding her husband on the bank of the Mississippi in Northeast. Saying he often beat her, she took a gun hidden in his dresser and waited as he climbed the riverbank after fishing.
100 years ago (1917)
The fish car, the "Glenwood," was taken back to the fish hatchery this afternoon after completing a trip to points north of Brainerd. Seventy-five cans of crappies and bass were unloaded at various stops. The capacity of the car is 180 cans.
