Reader Opinion: Vote yes in Pillager

I am writing in response to the Oct. 3 Reader Opinion letter concerning the upcoming referendum vote for Pillager Schools.

The letter uses arbitrary numbers to build a case against the referendum. However, without appropriate comparisons, based on facts, there is no validity to the argument. What should be analyzed is are we getting enough bang for our buck. There are available statistics, based on test scores, that we in Pillager are getting that. Our school is amongst the finest and yet our school taxes remain under state average. I would say that is proof that our school committee has diligently done their job and the poke at them was uncalled for.

Whether or not the letter intended to discredit the staff involved in performing arts and the students who participate, the tone was condescending and I thought unpleasantly patronizing. Obviously, the letter failed to keep abreast of the facts related to the beneficial effects music has on the brain, mood, memory, confidence, well being. Google it. The truth is out there. A quote from HowToLearn.com: "In 1996, the College Entrance Exam Board Service conducted a study on all students taking their SAT exams. Students involved in the performing arts scored 51 points higher on the verbal portion of the test and an average of 39 points higher on math."

Our performing arts staff and students deserve an appropriate space to proudly present their art. Look at the wonderful playing fields our athletes have. They are well equipped, and spacious. They enhance the sport for players, coaches and audience. Bravo, Pillager. You did the right thing. Let's do it again. This time for the arts. Vote yes on the referendum.
